They've been “Friends” for 10 long and lucrative years: David Schwimmer (Ross), Matthew Perry (Chandler), Matt LeBlanc, (Joey), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox Arquette (Monica) and Jennifer Aniston (Rachel).
When they showed up for work way back when, they were six good-looking 20-something unknown actors lining up to play six 20-something friends hanging out with each other in their New York haunts.
Friends became a weekly habit for millions of viewers around the globe and the hottest sitcom everywhere. In the process, the six stars became rich and famous, so much so that they jokingly suggested that each could ask $4 million to do a reunion special. It was obvious hyperbole, but no one will argue that they’ve become the highest paid actors on the home screen.
Question: Describe your emotions coming down the final stretch?
Jennifer Aniston: It’s absolutely painful in the weirdest way because it’s the most fun and joyous place to be. That’s hard to leave. It’s a deeper loss than I was expecting. Deep, deep down loss. We’re like delicate china speeding toward a brick wall. Inevitable pain.
Lisa Kudrow: We’re gonna smash into a million pieces and they’ll never be able to put us together again.
Matt LeBlanc: Bittersweet time. We’re all looking around and maybe thinking we took for granted how much time we get to spend together. Now we’re going to have to make appointments and plans. That stinks. It’s sad and hard to articulate. It’s almost a third of my life, a chapter closing.
Courteney Cox Arquette: I’m starting a family, (with husband actor David Arquette). I’m pregnant, so it’s good timing because I’ll have something to focus on. I can’t imagine life without these people. Hopefully we’ll all keep in touch.
Matthew Perry: It’s odd; 50 percent of me feels that the time is right to close this and time to get back on my figure skates (laughs). The other 50 percent is exactly what everybody’s been saying: It’s more than a show.
They’re a wonderful support group that loves each other. We’ve come together every day to make the world laugh. So it’s terrifying in a way. If one door closes, you hope another opens. It’s our job to find that door.
David Schwimmer: There are a million things we could try to say. It’s all been said. It’s going to be brutal, just brutal.
